Nepal President Bidhya Devi Bhandari made a trip to Janakpur’s Ram Janaki Temple on “Bibah Panchami”, an annual event to mark the marriage anniversary of Ram and Sita, that gathers large crowds from both Nepal and India. The president reached the temple amidst tight security and slogan-shouting by supporters of the United Democratic Madhesi Front.
The police was forced to lob a few rounds of tear gas shells to dispel the protesters. Bhandari, who flew in an army helicopter, insisted upon visiting the shrine despite warning by the security agencies about the prevailing tension. Addressing the crowd, she said the event was one of the finest examples of how social, cultural and marital relations between Nepal and India had continued for time immemorial.
